Just 20 minutes from Sintra and not far away from Lisbon, you’ll find Azenhas do Mar. Azenhas do Mar is a beautiful coastal village in Portugal and one of the best places for watching sunsets around Sintra. Especially the views over the Atlantic Ocean are magical and you can expect a very romantic and tranquil atmosphere.
Enjoying the sunset at Miradouro das Azenhas do Mar
Azenhas do Mar’s history started as a simple fishing village but has grown over the years into a beautiful seaside resort. The coastal town is famous for its white houses with terracotta roofs, which are sitting on top of a cliff and are overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. By the way, this picturesque small town reminds us of a coastal town in Greece with its Greek inspired architecture. It’s a really peaceful place that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook.
When you are visiting Azenhas do Mar, you have to make sure to go to the popular viewpoint which is called Miradouro das Azenhas do Mar. From there, you can have breathtaking views of the cliffs, the village and over a natural pool right by the beach.
We can highly recommend to visit this place before sunset as the coastal village will dive into golden light (when the sun goes down). We are sure that you will fall directly in love with this place!
Romantic dinner at Praia Grande and Bar do Fundo
After enjoying the entire afternoon at Azenhas do Mar, we headed over to Praia Grande. This beach is one of the most beautiful stretches of golden sand in the area of Sintra and also one of the most famous beaches and surf spots in the Lisbon area. On top, Praia Grande is easily accessible by car and is filled with beach bars and places to eat, which makes it perfect for a day out at the beach.
Finally, we ended our day at Bar do Fundo, a lovely restaurant right at the beach with a fantastic view over the Atlantic Ocean. It was a great place, where we enjoyed our dinner and watched the sun disappearing behind the ocean.
Azenhas do Mar is always worth a visit
Visiting the iconic coastal village Azenhas do Mar and the popular beach Praia Grande is a wonderful way to spend your time if you’re staying in Sintra or even coming from Lisbon. Be prepared to enjoy some of the most beautiful views Portugal has to offer, enjoy some great food and maybe even catch some waves if you’re into surfing.
