In the picturesque setting of the Algarve in Portugal, the FC Bayern Munich has recently completed an exclusive training camp at the luxurious Quinta do Lago resort. The unique training camp, following their impressive 3-0 victory against TSG Hoffenheim, marks a strategic move by the club to prepare for the demanding second half of the season. From Sunday (14th January) until Thursday (18th January 2024), the club stayed at the facilities in the Algarve.
The Bayern stars, including Thomas Müller (34), Harry Kane (30) and others, stayed at the 5-star Wyndham Grand Hotel in Almancil, less than 20 kilometers from Faro Airport. This choice of location wasn’t just about luxury, but it was a tactical decision by coach Thomas Tuchel (50) to ensure quality time with the team for team building and intensive training sessions.
The Quinta do Lago experience in Almancil
Quinta do Lago is especially known for its opulence and excellent sports facilities. Therefore, it is nothing new that this place is hosting top soccer teams. Before Bayern Munich, also soccer club VfL Wolfsburg under Coach Niko Kovac utilized this resort for their preparations. Tuchel himself is familiar with the resort’s offerings, having visited it in 2020 with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Bayern team trained on the resort’s own football pitch and enjoyed the sunny 18-degree weather in Faro – perfect for getting in shape. The players had access to various activities for relaxation and team bonding. Notably, golf enthusiasts like Kane and Müller could enjoy the area’s renowned golf courses set in stunning natural reserves. One additional advantage for the Bayern Munich team was probably also the proximity to the beautiful Ludo Trail, just around the corner from their stay. This trail which offers a peaceful walk close to the sea, is an ideal setting for the players to unwind and connect with nature, away from the crowds.
Bird watching paradise in the Algarve
The Algarve is especially known for its bird watching opportunities, and Quinta do Lago is no exception. The region is a paradise for bird lovers with a wide range of bird species making it a picturesque escape for the players. This unique aspect of the Algarve added an extra layer of charm to their training camp. For recovery, the team had access to a wellness area completed with a sauna, whirlpool, and sun terrace, where they could even join yoga sessions together with meditation enthusiast Tuchel. The nearby beach offered a serene spot for walks and enjoying picturesque sunsets over the lagoon.

Finally, the players were also able to enjoy a real culinary experience. The renowned Portuguese chef Olivier da Costa has a restaurant nearby where he serves delicacies like Lobster Steaks and Monkfish. Besides a great breakfast buffet, completed with freshly squeezed juices and a variety of local specialties, the players didn’t have to worry about anything. Especially for Tuchel, who is known for developing strict nutrition plans for his players, the place in the Algarve was a great choice.
Prepared for the upcoming challenges
Refreshed by the natural beauty of the Algarve and Quinta do Lago, Bayern Munich just arrived back in Munich to prepare for their next match against Werder Bremen. However, for an increasing number of clubs this place in the Algarve will become important in order to ensure a well preparation far away from the crowds.
