One of our favourite destinations this summer was the city of Mértola. Mértola is often referred to as a living museum and is situated in the Beja district of the Alentejo region in Portugal. On a cliff overlooking the Guadiana river, this beautiful riverside town was once a busy Mediterranean river port.
Mértola: The living museum of the Alentejo
The historical importance of Mértola can be traced back to its strategic location along the Guadiana river, which served as an essential trade route. Especially metals from the Alentejo’s interior and cereals from the fertile lands of Beja were facilitated at this river port.
Over time, Mértola developped into a busy commercial hub where goods from different parts of the Mediterranean world were exchanged. This legacy is still evident today in the town’s monumental heritage and can be explored. While discovering the streets of this unique Portuguese town, Mértola’s historical journey takes you through various ages.

Archaeological explorations have open a treasure trove of artifacts and structures that provide a window into Portugal’s history. It was great for us to discover parts of Mértola’s history and to feel the unique atmosphere. Not to miss out is the Castle of Mértola, where you have a wonderful view over the town and the Guadiana river. On top, the castle also has a museum inside. Here, you learn more about the town’s history from the past.

Torre do Relógio in Mértola
Below the castle, you have many different historical places to visit. Besides the main church of Mértola (Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Anunciação), which was built during the Muslim occupation, you can also visit the clock tower (Torre do Relógio). This one is located close to the river and perfect for taking some beautiful photos. Apart from these historic attractions, the whole centre of Mértola with its white-washed houses and the small narrow streets has a lot to offer. It’s just perfect for taking a walk far away from the crowds and enjoy the view over the Guadiana river. If you are lucky enough, you can also watch different species of colourful birds flying around at the valley of the Guadiana river. So keep your eyes open!
Visit Mértola and step back in time
Nowadays, Mértola is one of the most underrated places to visit in Portugal. The so called living museum of the Alentejo invites visitors to explore the long history of this town. Therefore, it really feels like stepping back in time. If you travel to Mértola on a hot summer day, we can also recommend you to visit this traditional ice-cream shop. It complements the atmosphere of Mértola and the ice is amazing.
Good to know: Every two years in spring, the Islamic Festival is hosted in Mértola to celebrate the Islamic heritage. The next festival will take place in Mai 2025.
