Our spotlights category is a place to feature and honour great Portuguese personalities and to tell their stories. Due to the current wildfires in Portugal, we thought it’s time to spotlight the firefighters who are risking their lives every day for us to fight the fires.
Already 4 firefighters died during wildfires in Portugal
For the short lifetime of our online-magazine, this is for sure the most difficult article to write. At the time of the writing, already four firefighters lost their lives while fighting the fires in Portugal. Therefore, we express our deepest condolences for the four firefighters who lost their lives. Our thoughts are with their families and friends:
- Sonia Cláudia Melo
- Paulo Jorge Santos
- Susana Cristina Carvalho
- João Silva
Besides that, many firefighters are still risking their lives every day for us to fight against the flames. It’s even more remarkable when we realize that most of the firefighters are volunteers and sometimes are even unpaid. While we are not in the position to change this current situation, we want you to think about how you can support the local firefighters in your community and to be aware of their incredible job.
National mourning day due to wildfires
As a result of the victims during the wildfires, the Portuguese government also announced a national mourning day for Friday (20th September 2024). For know, it’s time to give power to those who are still fighting the flames and hoping for some rain in the upcoming days.
Attention: We also want to ask you not to leave any waste or even cigarettes in nature. The smallest piece of waste can already leave to some very serious fires during this dry time of the year. Please treat the nature with respect!
