The Estádio de Honra (also called Estádio Nacional) in Oeiras is a special stadium in Portugal, as it does not belong to any Portuguese soccer club. Instead, the stadium hosts one of the most exciting matches of the season every year. But let’s have a closer look at this traditional stadium close to Lisbon, which does not meet modern European safety standards and only hosts one soccer match per year.
Home of the Taça de Portugal final
This week it was that time again, when more than 37,000 supporters enter the Estádio de Honra to watch the Portuguese soccer cup final “Taça de Portugal” between Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto. The final ended with a 2:1 win for Porto, who crowned themselves as cup winners this year. Besides the win of FC Porto, the Portuguese cup final was also the last match in the Estádio de Honra for this year.
Due to the fact that the stadium is exclusive host of the Taça de Portugal final, there will no other important soccer match take place until next year. While the stadium was initially also hosting matches of the Portuguese national team, with the modernization of most stadiums in Portugal for the EURO 2004, the national team changed location to the other modern stadiums in Portugal.
Soccer stadium inside a little forrest
Opened on June 10, 1944, during Portugal’s National Day celebrations, this stadium has become a central place for major sports events in Portugal and also the host of some bigger concerts such as the Black Eyed Peas in 2010.

One of the great characteristics of this traditional stadium is its historic charme and the fact that the stadium is embedded inside a small forrest. Surrounded by many trees, there is always an impressive view from the stands and the pitch.
That’s why, it’s more than recommended to watch a Portuguese soccer final inside this great stadium. Especially for soccer lovers and groundhoppers, this stadium has a special atmosphere and is worth your visit. Maybe the Taça de Portugal final in 2025 is a good opportunity for you to visit the Estádio de Honra close to Lisbon.
