One of the most romantic and historical castles in Portugal is located on a small island in the Tagus River. History of the Almourol Castle and restoration
The origins of the Almourol castle date back to the Reconquista period. During that time, the area of the castle in Vila Nova da Barquinha was a battleground between Christian forces and Moors. In 1129, a fortification known as Almorolan already existed on the site. However, the castle as we know it today began to take shape under the master of Knights Templar Gualdim Pais. He initiated the reconstruction of the Almourol castle in 1171 which could be proven by an inscription at the castle’s entrance.
It cannot be overlooked that the Almourol Castle was a strategically important part of the defense network along the Tagus river. Together with fortresses in Tomar, Zêzere and Cardiga, the Almourol Castle formed a defensive line in order to protect the area. In combination with ten observation points at the irregular wall of the castle, enemies had a hard time remaining undetected. Nevertheless, when the time of the Knights Templar came to an end, the Almourol Castle was largely forgotten in the country. It was finally in the 19th centure, when the castle underwent restoration and was remodeled in the romantic style.
