As the festive season comes closer, Portugal changes into a winter wonderland with its cities hosting some of the most magical Christmas markets in Europe. We will present you now four Christmas markets in Portugal that you should not miss out this year:
1. Wonderland in Lisbon:
Lisbon’s heart beats with festive cheer as Wonderland returns to Parque Eduardo VII from November 29 to January 5. This magical event brings the park to life with a gigantic Ferris wheel which offers breathtaking panoramic views of Lisbon. The 800 square meters ice rink adds to the winter magic and invites visitors to glide into the holiday spirit.

On top, the Santa Claus village is a dream for children, where they can visit Santa’s home and explore the village of affections. The Christmas tree and magical lights add to the atmosphere, while food trucks offer a variety of meals and drinks. The Christmas market completes the experience with stalls selling handicrafts, regional products, fashion and confectionery.
2. Porto’s Christmas Design Market:
In Porto, the Christmas Market (from 30th November to 23rd December) takes a creative vibe at Jardim da Cordoaria. With its focus on design, the market promises a unique Christmas atmosphere while featuring music, entertainment, workshops and regional handicrafts. Visitors can enjoy sweet treats, drinks and seasonal souvenirs with free entry. Beyond the market, the festive spirit spreads throughout Porto, with shows in the streets and neighborhoods. Finally, it’s also worth to have a look inside the renovated Bolhão Market as the market also joins the Christmas celebration in Porto.
3. Óbidos Christmas Village:

Within its historical walls, the city of Óbidos opens a Christmas oasis from December 6 to January 6, 2025. Right next to the historic castle, the Óbidos Christmas Village offers a romantic and beautiful setting. The festive market includes entertainment shows, craft shops, an ice rink, and a stage. However, entry to this unique Christmas village costs 10€ per person, but it’s promising a memorable Christmas experience for the whole family.
4. Madeira’s Christmas Market:
Even if Madeira is typically known for its variety of flowers and nature, the island hosts one of Portugal’s prettiest Christmas events in Funchal. From December 1 to January 5, the atmosphere is festive with daily entertainment. Highlights include the Market night on December 23 and the famous fireworks display on New Year’s Eve in Funchal bay. The Christmas market stalls along Avenida Arriaga and the small Christmas event at Mercado dos Lavradores, known as Christmas in the Square, add to the romantic Christmas charm.
These Christmas markets in Portugal offer a celebration of culture, tradition, and the joy of the season which makes them must-visit destinations this winter. Nevertheless, there will also be some beautiful Christmas markets in smaller places around Portugal. So don’t forget to check out the websites of the municipalities from each city.
