No matter if you’re here for the views, history or food, Lagos in the Algarve will not disappoint you. So next time you ask yourself what to do in Lagos, here are the best things to do and see in this beautiful town in the Algarve.

Starting at Mercado Municipal de Lagos

The best way to experience Lagos is through its flavors and there’s no better place to start than at the Mercado Municipal de Lagos. This local market is packed with fresh vegetables and fruits, seafood straight from the ocean and the best of Algarve’s traditional foods. From sweet oranges to local cheeses and cured meats, it’s a food lover’s paradise. Our personal recommendation: Don’t forget to grab some snacks and refreshments for later.

Lagos old town and stunning ocean views

As Lagos is a town rich in history, wandering through the old town of Lagos in the Algarve is a great discovery. Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and lively squares make it a perfect place to explore at a slow pace. Apart from that, Lagos old town has a great street art scene which lets you discover colourful walls and some great photo motifs. On top of that, the old town even has a park named Parque da Cidade de Lagos, where you can relax and enjoy nature while reading a book.

Forte da Ponta da Bandeira

One of the highlights for us is the Arco de São Gonçalo which is an ancient arch that leads towards the coast. From here, you’re just a short walk from the Fortaleza de Ponta da Bandeira, a 17th-century fort that once protected the city from pirate attacks. Here, the best parts are the stunning ocean views from the top.

What to do in Lagos: Beaches, caves & the famous cliffs

Lagos has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve and there are plenty to choose from. For us, Praia da Batata is a great starting point. Actually, it’s separated by rock formations and hidden caves that you can explore. It’s small and cozy, but full of charm. However, it might become crowdy during summer season at this beach in Lagos.

Praia dos Estudantes

A short walk away is Praia dos Estudantes which famous for its Roman Arch built into the cliffs. You might have seen this place already in some of the many Instagram photos from visitors. Therefore, this spot is perfect for capturing that classic Algarve postcard photo. Besides that, you can enjoy turquoise water, golden rock formations and a historic stone arch leading into the sea.

And our last Lagos beach tip? Ponta da Piedade. Just a short drive from the center (and with free parking), this area is home to some of the most breathtaking cliffs and rock formations in Portugal. The views over the Atlantic, the hidden caves and the crystal-clear water make this a must-visit. If you want the best experience, take a boat tour in Lagos to explore the caves up close cause it’s absolutely worth it.
